Why Your Home Pregnancy Test May give a False Positive

When you follow all the directions that come with your home pregnancy test, you will rarely get a false positive.  However, there are times when this can occur.  The following article will explain some of the reasons why.

hCG

hCG is the hormone the placenta produces that shows up in the urine during pregnancy.  It is often the first indication of pregnancy and more of it is present in the first urine of the morning which is why women are advised to use that urine in the home pregnancy test.

Reading the Test at the Wrong Time

Once you’ve read the results of your home pregnancy test discard it and move on.  No matter how much you stare at it, those initial results are not going to change.  If you’re not sure how to interpret the results check the package insert that came with your home pregnancy test.

Even though it’s not the results that change, going back and reading the test again may make the test look positive, especially if it’s the kind of home pregnancy test that has a line for a positive result.  This is an Evaporation line and it is known to surface after the test sits there for awhile but it is not an indication of pregnancy.

Chemical Pregnancy

This happens when a fertilized egg actually attaches itself to the uterus just enough to produce hCG but then for reasons unknown stops developing.  This happens to about 30-50% of all fertilized eggs and always has.  The only reason it is noticed now is because of the increased sensitivity of the home pregnancy test.

So while this happened in years past, no one realized it because that process wasn’t identified as a positive result.  With today’s ultra sensitive home pregnancy tests that are capable of showing a positive result with a minute amount of hCG present it’s easier to get a false positive result.

Using Fertility Drugs

The only drugs that can cause a home pregnancy test to give a false positive result are the ones that contain the hormone hCG, the same one that is produced by the placenta during pregnancy.  Fertility drugs are the only drugs that contain hCG so check with your doctor to determine if your fertility drug contains it.

If you receive injections containing hCG, wait a week or two after your last injection before taking a home pregnancy test.

If you believe you’re pregnant, you should follow up with your physician as soon as possible.

They are comfortable enough to rest in during the day when the baby does, and also won’t be constricting, which is very important particularly if you have a cesarean section. My daughter has always been flat busted. During her pregnancy she did get bigger, but she was concerned that she would not be a candidate for breast feeding babies. She wanted to do what was best for her child, but she was worried about the nutrition the baby would receive. Unfortunately the nurse that was on duty when she gave birth was a strong advocate for breast feeding babies. She insisted that my daughter needed to do this and gave her information as well as breast feeding advice. By the time my daughter left the hospital with her new born she was quite stressed out and feeling like a bad mother. She would try to get the baby to breast feed, but she and the baby would get frustrated. The baby would cry because it was so hungry and also because he could sense that his mother was anxious. After several minutes of both baby and mom being frustrated she would present him with a bottle of formula and he would hungrily eat. Many times he would then cry for hours after the feeding. She was convinced he was allergic to the formula, yet she did not have enough milk to satisfy his hunger. I went to stay with her for a few days because she was becoming so stressed. The baby woke up for a feeding while my daughter was sleeping. I did not want to disturb her so I mixed the formula and fed him. He was eating very fast and did not like it when I took the bottle away to burp him. Once he burped I fed him the remainder of the bottle and laid him back down. He did not have any pain or trouble. We realized that he was eating too fast and was getting too much gas built up. I suggested to my daughter that she feed him part of the bottle to satisfy his hunger and then breast feed him. This worked out much better for both of them. She was upset that the nurse did not give her this suggestion in the training on breast feeding babies. She went through several days of being over whelmed and feeling like a bad mother.

People tend to tell you about just about everything else under the sun that plagued them during their pregnancies, but no one seems to mention anything about stretch marks. Six months after giving birth to my second child, I still have horrendous stretch marks that don’t seem to be fading. I tried everything under the sun during my first pregnancy and still had awful stretch marks that were deep and red. Only about one year later did they seem to be somewhat subsiding, and I decided to get pregnant again which only added more on top of the ones that already existed! Creams, lotions and the like will not prevent them, no matter what they tell you about stretch marks and prevention. Sure, the creams will make your skin itch less, but they certainly won’t stop your body from producing marks.

You may think you have made it through pregnancy without getting them once you reach your last few days. Surprise! That’s another thing that is never mentioned about stretch marks – you often get them after you deliver your child! It makes absolutely no sense to me, but several women I know have gone through their entire nine months with not so much as a small mark, and them BAM! They deliver and they have stretch marks all over their sides. And when you start to lose your pregnancy weight? You know when you are supposed to start feeling good about yourself again? That’s when they become more apparent, mainly because they have less surface area to cover so they get all smashed together into one big lump.

Yes, pregnancy is a beautiful time in a woman’s life. But ask questions about stretch marks and other side effects before you even become pregnant. That way you won’t be surprised when your body is just never quite the same.

I have many clothing articles from the stores such as Gap and Old Navy and they certainly serve their purpose. For items like t shirts and basics, these stores are fantastic. For items for dressier occasions or even sweaters and the like, Mimi Maternity clothes are top notch. Their styling is above the rest, and the quality is deserving of the price tag. The clothing I have purchased from Motherhood Maternity, which is a low end specialty store, has quickly fallen apart and shrunk immensely after only one wash. Old Navy and Gap clothing have held up quite well overall, but some pieces have not lasted. My Mimi Maternity clothing has lasted through many wears and washes and through two pregnancies now.
